Just curious... is anyone here into that?
I know shibumi is because him and i have talked about that a while back... I recently have been doing a mix of tae kwon do and hapkido. Both have Korean orgins. When i was younger i trained in Shorin-ryu Karate and a tiny bit of kung fu but nothing serious..
So i just started back up and I would have liked to start with serious Tai Chi (a shibumi suggestion) but luckily a friend of mine runs a TKD school so i have the hook up with 1 on 1 private lessons.
So anybody else into this?

Actually I stopped like 3 years ago but I used to do it, not like every day but weekly. In total I think I've done it for 6 months, I know not very long but I dunno, I just got bored with it.

yeah i only have time to go once a week too.... i think that if you got every other day or daily and train... its totally different... because at this rate its almost like something to do, but going more frequently it becomes a part of your life.
I would like to go more and will as soon as i can create time, but for now.. once a week is the same for me :)

Kenpo is a great martial art from what I've seen. Who did you train with? The style I trained the longest was very close to the Kenpo I've seen.
I used to train Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do together as well. The two blend together very nicely for a well rounded martial art I think, minus the grappling. Unfortuntely, in my experience, most TKD instructors in America serve the watered down version. Surf around for some videos of TKD training in Korea and compare it to what you do now. Oh boy. To be honest, I'm glad I didn't get training like they do, they're fucking insane.
I recently just moved and am kind of in the same boat you are, by the sound of it, Zigx. I moved to a small city compared to Seattle, and it is definitely NOT a martial arts town. I plan to go out weekends soon to the parks in the slim hopes that I will find an independent teacher out there. Makes me miss living in L.A. so much in that respect. There are tons of great teachers out in the parks each morning on the weekends and many of them are some amazing artists. I might just end up doing what you're doing, and that's finding what I can and going from there. At least that way I might be able to network my way to a better teacher.
Shorin ryu shorin kan.. well i dont do that style but my friend donnie michaels does.. he taughtme alot of stand up fighting.. untill i got into muy thai... and dureing all of this i studied brazilian jiu- jitsu :) no i dont compete but donnie has won the weapons kata 4 years ina row.. the most ever..
Anyways i;m not big on katas i just like to fight. And not get tazed or arressted.. ouch@ getting tazed not fun

I'm a master of Intoxicata-do, the fine art of fighting when you are so drunk you can hardly stand.
Actually, I always wanted to go to india to learn Kalarippayat. Its supposed to be the oldest form of fighting, from which kung-fu and rest are derived from. But I would not say that kalarippayat is a sport, it more like an art of war. Its all about killing.

:) Just visited a webpage about kalarippayat, and thought I'd check out the photo gallery. Kalarippayat is at the same time a art of killing and a art of healing, and they often use massage techniques to help with the healing. Which is ok.....untill you see pictures like these:

I started with Taoist Tai Chi.. For about 3 or 4 years.. Taught a class of that.. Then went to Okinawan Gojo-Ryu Karate and Akai Ju-Jitsu. Trained about a year in both of those.. Worked out at the gym and boxed as well... Got right into the fitness thing for about 2 years.. Then I ended up taking a second job and that ended all my free time for about 18 months..Been kicking around the idea of going back to martial arts.. .
tai chi is alot abotu energy control.. butall them styles are old and the effectiveness is failing with inventionof new smarter techniques..i say out withthe old in with the new :P actually i just likes eeing people involed in fighting fun stuff

This was a cool thread, that's really cool that ya'll know this stuff. Where I live we have a few karate places, but it's kind of a joke, at least that's how I grew up looking at it. That's so cool that people are doing this kind of stuff. When I was a kid I always wanted to learn fencing, that wouldn't of happened, so me and my brother used to sword fight with sticks, that was alot of fun.

U know... just for the sake of health its good to just do SOMETHING...
martial arts are cool though because you are 'mastering' an art but actually learning how to use your body => mastering yourself....
and i bet some people probably come to this forum to do a little self mastering if u know what i mean lol

sorry but brazilian jiu-jitsu is the best to learn with muy thai...for self defense. judo is good toot hough, but has more focus on power than flow of movement and technique like bjj.. lol nice flying armbar video...but if you go the judo jiu-jitsu grappling road.. is trongly suggest startiong with key locks :P basic armbars.. things like that... cuz understanding how to control the armbar would help you understandthe flow ofmotion... .. cuz the type of arm bar he used is actualyl very very easy to escape cuz both legs arent; around the body.but he had his knees tight together which is an important elementt o the success of an armbar..but enough blabbing good to see such and interest in such "barbaric" practices

Its been more like 3 or 4 years since I was that active.. I know I know.. Im a lazy bastard... To be honest, I feel like shitput on 25 pounds.. I did manage to quit smokin though.. LOL... But the job Im at now limits my free time.. Im up and out the door by 5:30am and not home much before 6.. any free time in the evenings and Im getting caught up... Funny how shit happens..
Anyway, Akai ju-jitsu was used by the samurai.. Or so it was told to me.. Lots of ground work, joint lock and submission holds.. As Yow said, I suppose its similar to any grappling art thats out there now.. I was also told that in the good old days, when the samurai practiced thier technique on a partner, they would literally break the bones.. Dunno how true it is but I wasnt about to second guess my Sensai.. He was a big fucker.. LOL...
BTW.. Bruce Lee rocks...
most joint manipulation does ligiment and tendon damage before it breaks
but the first to happen is capsules pop.. that is aloud noise sounds like a break 2 pops.. after that is when ligiments and tendons rip.. so maybe they assumed they broke because the capsoles popping hurts!

he was just suggested you take your time and spell shit correctly(typing at a grade 5 level is not asking much). he wants you to continue posting or he wouldn't ask you to do this. it's merely so other people can read what you're trying to say. not to bitch at you.
stop being such a girl and taking everything to heart. people are so wound up around here that no one can say anything constructive anymore... i tried to make it more relaxing, but you all were against it. oh well. ;)

anyhoo.. i did take jeet kun do in toronto for a couple years. it was very interesting. my teacher starred in a few movies with jackie chan and chuck norris in the eighties(i think he did the choreography). if i can remember his name i'll let you all know.
i remember my first class, he chose me for a demonstration and told me to attack him any way i wished. i went to punch him in the shoulder(i didn't want to go for his face cuz he was a large mean looking asian dood). he twisted my wrist with two finger bringing me to my knees, once i was down he placed a finger behind my ear and i was immobile. he continued to talk to the class with me in this position. i pretended it didn't hurt but i swear i wanted to cry. once i was released i went over to hop up on the ledge we were sitting on. little did i know my whole arm was numb, and i collapsed to the floor.
fucking embarrassing as hell.
as far as my psot that was saying i;m nto changing.. nothing was misinterpereted.

I don't compete in MMA, just grappling tournaments.
abu dabi? where ya from dream? hehe i am in indiana been in several cage fights.. its been put on hold till i decide to get surgeory on my ankle. blah.. gotta get scar tissue removed from the ligiments so they will heal.. hehe love them ankle locks... do you know nick hyde(muy thai) or jeremy (bjj) since i forgot jeremys lastname here is his site http://ibjja.com/ ... hmm who else caique? well i am surrounded by very talented people..i;m shocked at the suprising interest on this site .. glad to see the sport became so popular.. i thinkt he show helped..
so do you do bjj tournaments? submuission grappling abu dabi rules? jsut curious :) we should go get a beer and share techniques if yrou anywhere clsoe

yes, abu dhabi rules or something similar usually. i think alex steibling is also from indiana and is a great fighter.
i'm in north carolina and have been lucky enough to for a head instructor from hayato sakurai's mach dojo to open up a school here. he has a pretty extensive MMA career and 3-time top place finisher in "Combat Wrestling" in Japan.
i follow MMA and grappling pretty heavily. what events have you fought in?
indiana cage rage... um i;ve fought at fenke's...its near chicago.. intense combat usedto have the indian news but he quit doing it...daryl smith is the one who competes alot... he lost a match by not entering to the bell in a hook and shoot bout.. he had just won the national bnelt and fought 3 weeks later.. he gass'd puked and quit lol... well i haven;t fought in awhile.. cuz ofmy ankle i am delaying asurgeory i really dont wananget.
wella nyways.. i watched ufc 52 and they talked about matt hughes.. tapped out the french candadian guy.. the french canadian guy had a reverse keylock and matthughes put ona straight arm bar from it??????????? well i haven;t seen that bout its got me baffeled though. and why isn;t afigure 4 shoke widelyy used FRom a backmount?i mean they got the back and use simple hooks.. ifyou get that figure 4 they aint getting out..hehe and i don't mean crossed feet cuz thats stupid... i mean a complete figure 4 aroundthe body.. well just my thoughts.. what events have yuou been in? care to give some ofyoru history?
dream
05-24-2005, 04:58 AM
yow, a figure four bodylock from backmount is sometimes hard to get. i have short legs, so i just go for standard hooks unless i think i can get the body lock. some guys just have great choke defense, like caol uno.
yeah, hughes armbarred st-pierre. it's a pretty easy counter, you'll notice it when you see the move.
i've only competed in NAGA, Budweiser World Cup, Gracie Nationals and Grapplers Quest.
lol yeah i seent he move.. pierre had it from his guard.. whats worse is an open guard.
hehe i;m usually good ina choke.. jsut go limp for liek 10 minutes tillt hey can;t hold it no more.. witha simple thumb up when someoen ask if i am ok.
i dont really ahve long legs.. i just i guess feel it is a sure win once you get that much control... those are some good names.. nice tournys to be in.. you get far in any?
