Default reducing size of file?

I have some high quality pics, but they exceed the 390k limit. They are jpeg and are about 500k to 900k. Anyone know how to shrink the file size to 350k besides cropping them?

Default Re: reducing size of file?

I use "Microsoft Office Picture Manager." I got it as part of the Office 2003 software package. Here is the process I use:

"edit pictures"
"resize picture"
"percentage of original width X height" as the variable.

Then I simply go down in 5% increments. I'll start with 95% and save it with a new name (so I can keep my larger original) and then check the file size. If it is still too big, I repeat the process until it is under the file size limits.

If you do not have that program, I suggest searching for a free image viewer/editor. Try searching for IfranView and download it. You will also need to download the IfranView plug-in package I believe. It is a very good program and you can resize pictures there in the same way I described above. You would start under the "image" menu and go to "resize/resample." Play with the settings there until you find something that works.

I hope that helps. I'm sure there are other ways (and maybe better ones) but that is what I do. It has worked for me.

If you have any way of selecting the "quality" of the jpg you can usualy turn them down to about 70% without losing noticable picture quality and drastically reducing file size.

Make sure to save the original file for yourself unless you want the lower quality image.

A simpler solution would be to use a site like imagshack (only for resizing, of course). They do it for free. Then, when it is resized, just copy it to your hard drive. I don't know if there would be a loss of quality.
